Millions of people in India live in slums. They are considered outcasts, unwanted, nobodies in India’s caste and class system. In Chennai alone, 10 million people live in slums like Kannagi Nagar. Most of them live in one-room shacks. Because of the taboo that comes with living in the slums, work is scarce; and if they do find work, it entails long hours for insufficient wages. If there is no work available, some resort to begging, scavenging or prostitution to be able to earn enough to eat. Their children are also put to work. Toilets are scarce, so the stench of human waste pollutes the air. Garbage is everywhere. There is no running water. Basic human necessities are luxuries here. Everyone is vulnerable to disease. There is little to no hope here and the rate of suicide is very high as some look to this as an easy escape.
Pastor Nandakumar and his wife Preetha lead a little team in showing the love of Jesus to these people faithfully, every week, especially to the children. Their goal? For the transforming love of Jesus to be experienced in the same way as they had. There are over 4000 homes in this slum alone, which houses over 40,000 people. Nobody wants to go here – by nobody, we mean including ministers of the Word. Nobody wanted to be a part of these people before. David and Gen were invited to go along with this ministry and were incredibly humbled and walked away more blessed than ever. Upon their return to the U.S., they shared their experience and invited people to join them in financially supporting Mahanaim Ministries. The financial support ensures continued impact in the slums through the Gospel of Jesus. In every sense, we are seeing how clear the harvest is plenty and the workers indeed are so few. We would love for you to support us in this important ministry. If you have any questions or want to partner with us, please do contact us.
